I man sits on a bench
Eating a sandwich
In front of a store
He watches as families enter
The kids leave happy
Their parents please at themselves
This repeats as he eats
He finishes
A man and his daughter stop
They are window shopping
The girl asks to go in
With a tried face the fathers says they can’t
He knows that look
His father would give him the same look
It meant they didn’t have the money
The father and daughter leave disappointed
He looks at his reflection in the storefront
He stares wondering will that be his fate
His alarm goes off
Back to work
He puts on the apron that is next to him
He goes into kitchen of the restaurant next door
Head hung low
For he knows the answer all to well
He will share his father’s fate
It breaks his heart
